You have a great idea in your head and are ready to transfer it to the page. So, you start writing it out, expecting your book to be the final word on whatever topic you’re covering. Think again. Because if you think publishing your book is the last thing you’ll say to your audience, you’re wrong. In fact, publishing your book is the start of conversation not the end.
How can this be? After all, once you publish your book, haven’t you told readers everything you want to say? I doubt it.
Why Your Book Is the Start of the Conversation
Remember—you’re the expert in finance or business coaching or your life. You may spill the beans in your book, but as soon as those beans hit the page, something happens. You keep learning. Your understanding grows like the magic beans Jack stole from the giant. You see the holes in your arguments that you need to fill.
That’s why so many great books wind up with multiple versions. An author reviews her work and finds unanswered questions. Or readers ask new questions not addressed in the book. So, the author gets back to work, to make sure the book is as powerful and useful as possible.
What Makes Me So Confident
How do I know those beans will grow? Because you’re a person, and people are constantly evolving. Does that mean you’ll have two or three versions of your book? No. It does mean you won’t pass your book to readers and simply walk away.
After all, once readers digest what you have to say, they’ll have questions or comments. They’ll have stories about how your story resonated with them, challenged them, or made them understand someone else better. And you’ll want to hear it all.
Fill up on the info your readers give you, and you may find a new reason to engage them. You may even find the topic for your next book.
So, write furiously, publish your book, and get it in your ideal readers’ hands. But don’t expect that to be all you have to say to them. Most likely, your book will be the start of a conversation that will go on until the day you die.
